Osteoporosis: A Natural Hygiene Perspective on Bone Remodelling, Movement and Terrain

Osteoporosis is a condition in which bone strength is reduced and fracture risk increases. Bone is living tissue, continually being broken down and rebuilt through a process called remodelling.

Bone Really Is Continually Rebuilt

Specialised cells remove old bone while others form new bone. Across life, the balance between these processes changes. Age, menopause, genetics, physical loading, nutrition, hormones, medicines and certain illnesses can all affect bone density and structure.

This continual renewal fits Natural Hygiene’s emphasis on self-maintenance very well. Bone health depends on the conditions supplied to living tissue over many years, not merely on swallowing one isolated nutrient.

Does an “Acid Diet” Pull Calcium From Bone?

The blood is kept within a very narrow pH range by powerful respiratory and kidney regulation. Diet can alter the acid load handled by the kidneys and can change urine chemistry, but ordinary foods do not make the blood chronically acidic and force the skeleton to rescue it by continually surrendering calcium.

Natural Hygiene can make the stronger terrain argument instead: a dietary pattern needs to provide adequate protein, calcium, vitamin D and other nutrients while supporting healthy body composition and metabolic health. Fruit, vegetables, greens, nuts, seeds and other appropriate whole plant foods can contribute importantly to that pattern.

Movement Is a Biological Signal

Bone responds to mechanical loading. Weight-bearing activity and resistance exercise provide signals that help maintain bone and muscle, while prolonged inactivity contributes to loss. This is one of the clearest physiological foundations for Natural Hygiene’s emphasis on natural movement.

Sunlight, Vitamin D and Recovery

Vitamin D supports calcium absorption and bone metabolism, and sunlight can contribute to vitamin D production in the skin. The amount produced varies with season, latitude, skin pigmentation, age, clothing and time outdoors, so sunlight alone does not guarantee adequate vitamin D.

Rest and sleep support overall health, but fasting is not a method for dissolving acidic residues from bone. Prolonged fasting or inadequate energy and protein intake can be counterproductive when maintaining bone and muscle is the goal.

Osteoporosis is often silent until a fracture occurs. A fracture after a minor fall, unexplained loss of height or sudden severe back pain deserves assessment.

Vital Economy and Bone Maintenance

Bone remodelling is a useful example of Vital Economy when the concept is grounded in physiology. Building and maintaining bone requires energy, protein, minerals, hormonal signalling and mechanical stimulation. When energy availability is chronically inadequate, reproductive and bone-related physiology can both be affected.

This does not mean the body deliberately sacrifices bone merely to divert a mysterious store of vital force elsewhere. It means bone exists within the same nutritional and metabolic economy as every other tissue.

Toxaemia and the Bone Terrain

Natural Hygiene’s broader concept of toxaemia can be applied to the whole terrain — food pattern, smoking, alcohol, inactivity, metabolic health, medicines, sleep and other exposures — without claiming that osteoporosis is caused by acidic toxins physically dissolving the skeleton.

The Observation and the Interpretation

The observation is that bone is continually remodelled and that bone density and strength respond to age, hormones, loading, nutrition and disease. Natural Hygiene interprets this within the wider terrain of nourishment, movement, recovery and Vital Economy.

What goes beyond the evidence is claiming that ordinary foods acidify the blood and force the body to strip calcium from bone. The stronger Natural Hygiene argument is that living bone reflects the conditions supplied to it over many years.
