What if health is not something we manufacture, take or add to the body, but something that emerges when the conditions of life are right?

That idea sits at the heart of orthobionomics, one of the most interesting — and now largely forgotten — terms used by Natural Hygiene pioneer Herbert M. Shelton.

Shelton did not use the word simply as another name for healthy living. He coined it to describe a much broader idea: the correct adaptation of environment to life.

In other words, instead of continually trying to manipulate the body, orthobionomics asks a different question:

What conditions does a living organism actually require in order to function as it was designed to function?

What Does Orthobionomics Mean?

To understand the term, it helps to begin with another old biological word: bionomy.

In The Hygienic Care of Children, Shelton described bionomy as the science of the laws of living functions, including the habits and adaptations of living organisms. He then explained that he had coined the word orthobionomics to mean the correct adaptation of environment to life.

He went further and stated simply:

“Orthobionomics is natural Hygiene.”

This gives us an important insight into what Shelton believed Natural Hygiene actually was.

It was not merely a diet. It was not fasting. It was not food combining. And it was certainly not a collection of natural remedies.

It was an attempt to understand the requirements of living organisms and organise human life around those requirements.

Why Adapt the Environment to the Body?

Modern life often works in the opposite direction.

We construct lifestyles around work schedules, convenience, entertainment, artificial stimulation and social habits, then expect the body to adapt indefinitely.

When the body struggles, we frequently focus on changing the body rather than examining the conditions in which it is being asked to operate.

Orthobionomics turns that relationship around.

The organism is not treated as the thing that needs redesigning. Instead, we examine whether its surroundings and habits are compatible with its biological requirements.

That includes much more than food.

The Conditions of Life

Shelton’s first volume of The Hygienic System, published as Orthobionomics in 1934 and later reprinted as The Science and Fine Art of Natural Hygiene, explored subjects including:

  • cells and their environment;
  • the basic needs of living organisms;
  • the laws of life;
  • internal symbiosis;
  • physiological compensation;
  • rest and relaxation;
  • sleep;
  • air and light;
  • physical care of the body;
  • emotional control;
  • the effects of stimulating and harmful habits;
  • the care of babies and children;
  • and the relationship between individual health and society.

This breadth matters.

Natural Hygiene is sometimes reduced today to questions such as what someone eats or whether they fast. Shelton’s concept of orthobionomics was far wider: the whole environment of life matters.

A Cell Cannot Be Separated from Its Environment

One of the most useful ways to understand orthobionomics is to think about a cell.

A cell does not exist independently of its surroundings. Its behaviour depends upon access to appropriate nutrients, water, gases, temperature, chemical conditions and the removal of metabolic wastes.

Change its environment sufficiently and its function changes.

The same principle extends outward.

Human beings require suitable food, water, air, sunlight, sleep, movement, rest, emotional balance and other conditions of life. Our physiology continually responds to the circumstances in which we place it.

From a Natural Hygiene perspective, therefore, health cannot be understood solely by examining isolated organs or symptoms. We also have to examine the conditions under which the entire organism is living.

Orthobionomics and the Laws of Life

Another major idea in Shelton’s work was that living processes are lawful.

Digestion, circulation, repair, elimination, sleep, adaptation and reproduction do not occur randomly. They operate according to biological processes inherent in living organisms.

We cannot negotiate with those processes simply because our lifestyles have changed.

A person may choose to remain awake night after night, but the biological requirement for sleep does not disappear.

We can live almost entirely indoors, but that does not mean humans cease to be organisms shaped by a natural environment.

We can continually stimulate ourselves when tired, but stimulation does not abolish the physiological need for rest.

Orthobionomics therefore asks us to recognise the difference between what humans can temporarily tolerate and the conditions under which human biology functions best.

Orthobionomics Is Bigger Than Nutrition

This distinction also explains another Shelton term: orthotrophy.

Shelton coined orthotrophy for the part of orthobionomics concerned specifically with food and feeding.

That means nutrition sits inside the larger framework of orthobionomics.

Food matters enormously, but food alone cannot compensate for chronic sleep deprivation, lack of movement, insufficient rest, persistent emotional strain or an unsuitable environment.

This is one reason Natural Body Intelligence approaches health as a whole-body process rather than a collection of isolated dietary interventions.

The Stimulant Delusion

One particularly interesting chapter in Shelton’s Orthobionomics was called The Stimulant Delusion.

The underlying question remains highly relevant: when something makes us feel more energetic, has it actually supplied energy?

Natural Hygiene distinguishes between genuine restoration and stimulation.

A tired organism may be capable of being pushed into further activity, but the ability to stimulate additional activity does not necessarily mean that the underlying need for rest has disappeared.

This leads to an important orthobionomic principle: rather than repeatedly overriding biological signals, we should first ask what requirement those signals may be communicating.

Physiological Compensation

Living organisms are extraordinarily adaptable.

The body can redistribute resources, alter activity and compensate for unfavourable circumstances for surprisingly long periods.

That adaptability is one of the reasons poor conditions do not always produce immediate consequences.

But compensation should not be confused with ideal function.

A body that is continually compensating is still responding to its environment.

This opens up another important subject from Shelton’s work — physiological compensation — which we will explore separately in this series.

Orthobionomics and Biogony

Orthobionomics also connects directly with another forgotten Shelton term we have explored: biogony.

Where orthobionomics concerns creating conditions compatible with life, biogony concerns what Shelton regarded as the living organism’s active struggle under adverse conditions.

Together they reveal a consistent idea running through his work.

Rather than viewing the body as a passive machine that must constantly be corrected from outside, Shelton viewed it as an active, adaptive organism whose behaviour needs to be understood in relation to its environment.

What Would Orthobionomic Living Look Like Today?

The word may sound complicated, but the practical question behind it is remarkably simple:

Does the way I live support the biological needs of a human being?

That might mean examining:

  • whether we sleep when genuinely tired;
  • whether we receive enough natural light and fresh air;
  • whether our bodies move regularly;
  • whether periods of activity are balanced by genuine rest;
  • whether our food resembles the foods to which human physiology is suited;
  • whether we continually override fatigue with stimulation;
  • whether our emotional environment permits periods of calm;
  • and whether we allow the body sufficient opportunity to carry out its own regulatory processes.

Orthobionomics is therefore less about adding another health practice and more about removing the mismatch between biological needs and everyday life.

Why Did the Word Disappear?

Orthobionomics never became part of mainstream health vocabulary.

Even within Natural Hygiene, simpler terms eventually became more familiar.

Yet losing the word may also have obscured something valuable about the original scope of the movement.

Natural Hygiene was intended to encompass much more than diet and fasting. It concerned the relationship between life and the conditions of life.

Recovering Shelton’s terminology helps us recover that wider perspective.

The Natural Body Intelligence Perspective

At Natural Body Intelligence, this principle remains central to how we understand health.

The body is not separate from its environment. Every day it responds to food, sleep, movement, rest, light, air, emotional demands and the many other conditions we create around it.

The aim is not to micromanage every biological process.

It is to understand what the organism requires and stop unnecessarily obstructing those processes.

That is why a word coined almost a century ago still deserves attention.

Orthobionomics asks us to stop trying to make biology fit our lifestyle — and instead consider whether our lifestyle fits our biology.
