What if the word disease is sometimes too broad to describe what is actually happening inside the body?
That question sat at the heart of Herbert M. Shelton’s Natural Hygiene writings. Shelton argued that very different biological phenomena had been grouped together under a single label. Tissue degeneration, structural damage and loss of function could all be called disease — but so could fever, inflammation, vomiting, diarrhoea and other active physiological responses.
He believed those things should not automatically be treated as though they were the same process.
To make the distinction clearer, Shelton introduced an unusual word that has almost disappeared from modern health vocabulary:
Biogony.
What Does Biogony Mean?
Shelton constructed the word from Greek roots relating to life and struggle or contest. In The Hygienic System: Orthopathy, he described it as the “struggle of life” and applied the term to what he regarded as the body’s active defensive and restorative operations.
This was not simply another word for disease.
It was Shelton’s attempt to separate what the body is doing from the damage or deterioration that may already exist.
Why Shelton Thought the Word “Disease” Was Inadequate
Shelton recognised a problem with conventional terminology.
A person with paralysis can be described as diseased. A person experiencing fever can also be described as diseased. Yet one describes a loss or impairment of function while the other involves considerable physiological activity.
Likewise, degeneration of tissue is fundamentally different from coughing, mucus production, inflammation, diarrhoea or vomiting. The first describes a condition of tissue. The others describe things the living organism is actively doing.
Shelton therefore argued that placing all of these phenomena beneath the same word could obscure an important biological distinction.
In his terminology:
- Biogony described the active physiological response.
- Pathology described damaged, deteriorated or degenerated tissues and fluids.
- Pathogen was used in his broader historical sense for whatever produced pathology — not merely microorganisms.
Whether or not we adopt Shelton’s vocabulary today, the distinction itself raises an interesting question: when we experience a symptom, are we looking at the underlying problem, the body’s response to the problem, or a mixture of both?
Biogony as Redirected Physiology
One of Shelton’s central arguments was that many acute symptoms involve normal physiological abilities being altered in intensity or direction.
The body already knows how to raise and lower temperature. It can increase circulation. It produces mucus. It can initiate coughing. It can move material rapidly through the bowel. It can alter appetite, energy expenditure and behaviour.
These capacities do not suddenly appear when someone becomes unwell.
They are part of normal physiology.
What changes is how strongly they are expressed and how the body coordinates them.
Shelton therefore described biogony as physiology that had been modified, intensified, reduced or redirected in response to circumstances.
A Simple Example: Fever
Fever illustrates the distinction particularly well.
A rise in body temperature is not simply something that happens to a passive body. Temperature is actively regulated through the nervous system, circulation, metabolism and behaviour.
Modern physiology likewise recognises fever as a regulated response rather than merely uncontrolled overheating.
Shelton’s interpretation went further. Within his Hygienic framework, the fever itself belonged to the organism’s response — the biogony — rather than being identical to the underlying pathology or its cause.
This does not mean that every fever is harmless, nor does the word biogony tell us why a particular person has developed one. It describes a way of distinguishing an active response from the circumstances that prompted it.
Biogony Is Not the Same as Pathology
This is perhaps the most important part of Shelton’s idea.
He did not argue that every phenomenon called disease was beneficial or restorative.
In his later writing he explicitly pointed to blindness, deafness, paralysis, emphysema, cancer and other degenerative conditions as examples that could not reasonably be described as remedial activity.
That was precisely why he wanted another word.
For Shelton, pathology referred to deterioration or damage. Biogony referred to the living organism’s response.
The distinction can be represented simply:
Cause or burden → disturbance/damage → biological response
Those three things can coexist, but they are not necessarily identical.
Why Symptoms Can Be Misleading
We naturally judge illness by what we can feel.
Pain attracts attention. Fever attracts attention. Mucus, coughing, diarrhoea, fatigue and inflammation attract attention.
But some serious pathological changes can progress with few obvious symptoms, while an acute response can produce dramatic symptoms over a relatively short period.
That creates a strange situation: the most noticeable part of an illness may not necessarily be the underlying problem.
Natural Hygiene has always placed considerable importance on this distinction.
Rather than asking only, “How do we stop this symptom?”, the Hygienic approach also asks:
Why is the body producing this response?
Biogony and the Whole Body
Shelton did not regard these responses as isolated actions by individual organs.
A fever, for example, involves changes in circulation, metabolism, nervous-system activity, appetite, thirst, behaviour and energy use. Inflammation involves coordinated vascular, cellular and chemical changes. Vomiting recruits the digestive tract, diaphragm, nervous system and muscular system.
The organism responds as a whole.

Biogony and the Natural Hygiene View of Healing
Natural Hygiene begins with the premise that living organisms possess their own capacities for regulation, repair and adaptation.
A cut does not require us to consciously organise clotting and tissue repair. Exercise produces adaptation without our consciously rebuilding muscle fibres. The body continually regulates temperature, fluid balance, blood chemistry and countless other variables without conscious direction.
Shelton extended this reasoning into his understanding of illness.
He believed many acute symptoms represented organised biological responses rather than random malfunction.
This idea remains central to the way Natural Body Intelligence approaches the subject: before trying to silence a response, first try to understand what the organism is doing and why.

How Biogony Relates to a Healing Crisis
Readers familiar with Natural Hygiene may notice similarities between biogony and the later discussion of a healing crisis.
They overlap, but they are not exactly the same term.
Biogony was Shelton’s broader attempt to classify active physiological responses he considered defensive or remedial. “Healing crisis” is commonly used within Natural Hygiene for a temporary episode in which symptoms appear or intensify during changing conditions, including fasting or major lifestyle change.

Why the Idea Matters Today
You do not have to use the word biogony in everyday conversation to appreciate the question Shelton was trying to answer.
When the body changes its behaviour during illness, several different things may be occurring simultaneously:
- there may be an underlying burden or cause;
- there may be tissue damage or degeneration;
- there may be compensatory changes;
- there may be protective responses;
- there may be repair processes;
- and there may be symptoms produced by those responses.
Calling all of this simply “disease” can make it easy to forget those distinctions.
Shelton was trying to create a vocabulary that forced us to ask a more precise question:
Which part is the problem — and which part is the living body responding to the problem?
The Natural Body Intelligence Perspective
More than anything, biogony is useful because it changes the direction of the question.
Instead of seeing every uncomfortable bodily action as evidence that the body has failed, we can investigate the process itself.
Why has temperature changed?
Why has appetite disappeared?
Why is mucus being produced?
Why is inflammation occurring?
Why does the body demand sleep and stillness?
Those questions do not require us to assume that every symptom is beneficial, nor should serious or unexplained symptoms be ignored. They simply recognise that symptoms are biological events with mechanisms and purposes that deserve to be understood.
That is one of the most valuable ideas preserved in Shelton’s forgotten word.
Biogony asks us to stop looking only at what the body is doing to us — and start asking what the body itself may be trying to do.
