What if health made more sense when we stopped beginning with disease and started by asking a more fundamental question: what does a living organism actually require in order to live well?

That question takes us to an almost forgotten word: bionomy.

The word is rarely encountered today, yet it expresses an idea that sits close to the heart of Natural Hygiene. Herbert M. Shelton described bionomy as the science of the laws of living functions, and also as the branch of biology concerned with habits and adaptation.

In other words, before asking how to treat a problem, bionomy asks how life itself works.

What Does Bionomy Mean?

The word comes from Greek roots associated with life and law. Historically, the term was used more broadly than Shelton’s writings alone. Nineteenth-century discussions of bionomy described it as a science concerned with the laws governing living beings.

Shelton adopted the concept as part of his attempt to place Natural Hygiene within biology rather than treating it merely as a collection of health practices.

For Shelton, this distinction mattered. Eating, sleeping, breathing, moving, resting, drinking water and interacting with our surroundings are not separate health tricks. They are ordinary requirements and activities of a living organism.

Natural Hygiene as a Study of Life

Natural Hygiene is often reduced to particular practices, especially fasting or diet. Shelton repeatedly argued against this narrow interpretation.

He wanted Hygiene understood as an integrated whole. Food has a place. Rest has a place. Exercise has a place. Sunlight, fresh air, water, sleep, emotional balance and other normal requirements of life all have their place.

This is why the concept of bionomy is useful. It shifts attention away from individual remedies and towards the conditions under which living organisms function.

Natural Hygiene, viewed this way, becomes less about asking, “What can I take for this?” and more about asking, “What conditions does the body require, and which of those conditions are being met or violated?”

Bionomy and Orthobionomics Are Not the Same Thing

This is where Shelton’s terminology becomes particularly interesting.

Bionomy concerns the laws and functions of life and the way organisms adapt.

Orthobionomics goes a step further. Shelton used that term for the correct relationship between life and its environment.

The distinction is important because an organism can adapt without that adaptation necessarily representing an ideal state.

Adaptation Does Not Always Mean Health

The human body is extraordinarily adaptable.

It can alter behaviour and physiology when food is scarce, sleep is restricted, temperatures change, physical demands increase or the environment becomes difficult.

But the ability to continue functioning under difficult conditions does not automatically mean those conditions are desirable.

This gives us a useful way to think about many modern habits. A person may become accustomed to insufficient sleep, constant stimulation, sedentary living or an unsuitable diet. The fact that life continues does not prove that the conditions are optimal.

Shelton’s wider system therefore distinguished adaptation itself from what he considered a correct adaptation of life and environment.

The Body Is Constantly Adjusting

One of the most useful consequences of thinking bionomically is that the body stops looking like a static machine.

It is continuously adjusting.

Temperature changes. Hunger changes. Thirst changes. Energy availability changes. Digestion changes according to what and when we eat. Sleep pressure builds and falls. Physical exertion changes circulation and respiration. Tissues repair and renew.

These processes do not happen independently. The body’s systems operate as parts of one living whole.

This is an important theme within Natural Body Intelligence: understanding what the body is doing before automatically assuming that every change needs to be opposed.

The Laws of Life

When early Hygienists spoke about “laws of life”, they were not suggesting that somebody had written a literal rulebook for the human body.

They were referring to observable biological regularities and requirements.

Humans require oxygen. We require water. We require nourishment. We require periods of sleep. Muscles respond to use and disuse. The body regulates temperature within limits. Living tissues require suitable environmental conditions.

Natural Hygiene attempted to build a philosophy of health around understanding and respecting these biological needs rather than continually looking for substances or interventions to manipulate the body.

Why Bionomy Matters to Natural Body Intelligence

The word itself may be obscure, but the question behind it is remarkably relevant:

What are the conditions under which human life functions best?

That question changes the direction of health education.

Instead of beginning with hundreds of named conditions and searching for hundreds of corresponding remedies, we can begin with the organism itself: its needs, its limitations, its capacity to adapt and its responses when its conditions change.

This also helps explain why Natural Hygiene is broader than fasting. Shelton argued that fasting should not become synonymous with Hygiene because the wider system concerns the whole relationship between life and the conditions that support it.

From Bionomy to Biogony

Once we start thinking about the body as a living, adaptive organism, another of Shelton’s unusual terms becomes easier to understand: biogony.

Shelton coined biogony for processes within what was broadly labelled “disease” that he interpreted as active, remedial responses of the organism. Crucially, he did not apply the term to every disease state; he distinguished these activities from degeneration and structural pathology.

A Forgotten Word, but a Powerful Question

We do not need to bring the word bionomy back into everyday conversation for its central idea to be valuable.

Before we can understand health, we need to understand life.

What does the human organism require? How does it respond to its environment? How does it adapt? What happens when its normal needs are repeatedly unmet? And what happens when more favourable conditions are restored?

Those questions are as relevant now as they were to the early Natural Hygienists.
