Most discussions about nutrition begin with nutrients.
Protein. Carbohydrates. Fats. Vitamins. Minerals. Calories.
Herbert M. Shelton approached the subject from a much wider perspective. Within his Natural Hygiene writings, he used a word that has now almost disappeared from health literature: orthotrophy.
For Shelton, eating correctly was not simply a matter of calculating what was contained in food. It was part of a much larger question: What are the normal conditions under which a human organism is designed to live?
What does orthotrophy mean?
Shelton described orthotrophy as the branch of his wider system concerned with correct feeding. He stated that he coined the term from roots meaning, essentially, correct nourishment or feeding.
But there is an important distinction here.
Orthotrophy was not intended merely as another name for conventional nutrition. Shelton was interested in food as one element within the total biological requirements of life.
That places orthotrophy inside the larger concept he called Orthobionomics: the correct adaptation of the conditions of life to the needs of the living organism.
Why invent another word for nutrition?
Shelton believed that nutrition had become too narrowly associated with chemistry.
Knowing the chemical composition of a food does not automatically tell us whether that food is appropriate for a particular species, how it should be eaten, how much should be eaten, or under what circumstances eating should take place.
A laboratory can tell us that a substance contains protein, carbohydrate, minerals and other compounds. That does not, by itself, answer the biological question of whether it belongs naturally in the human diet.
Orthotrophy therefore asks a different question from simple nutrient analysis:
What foods and feeding practices are most consistent with the biological nature of the human organism?
Food is only one requirement of life
This is where the concept becomes particularly relevant to Natural Hygiene.
Food cannot create health independently of everything else.
A person may eat an excellent diet while sleeping badly, living under constant stress, rarely moving, spending little time outdoors or continually exhausting themselves.
Natural Hygiene therefore considers food alongside the other normal requirements of life: clean air, water, sunlight, rest, sleep, movement, emotional balance and an environment compatible with human needs.
This broader approach is one reason Shelton’s terminology is useful. Orthotrophy describes food within a biological system rather than treating diet as an isolated intervention.
The difference between feeding and nourishing
Another important Natural Hygiene distinction is that eating food and nourishing the body are not identical processes.
We can put food into the digestive tract. The body must then perform the work of digestion, absorption, transportation, assimilation and utilisation.
The food does not perform those processes. The living organism does.
This returns us to Bionomy — the study of the laws and functions of living organisms. Nutrition only makes sense when we consider what the living body actually does with what we consume.
Eating according to biological adaptation
Orthotrophy also raises a fascinating question that modern nutrition discussions often overlook: What is the human being biologically adapted to eat?
Different species have different anatomical, physiological and behavioural relationships with food. Their teeth, digestive systems, senses, feeding behaviours and natural environments all influence what constitutes an appropriate diet.
Natural Hygiene traditionally placed considerable emphasis on fresh fruits and tender plant foods, viewing fruit as particularly well suited to human physiology. At Natural Body Intelligence, this remains central to how we understand natural nourishment.
This does not mean that food should be reduced to a rigid list of permitted and forbidden items. Orthotrophy invites us to examine diet from the perspective of biological compatibility rather than simply following cultural habits or nutritional fashions.
When we eat matters too
Correct feeding is not only about what is eaten.
Hunger, appetite, rest, emotional state, frequency of meals and the body’s current condition all affect the context in which eating occurs.
Natural Hygiene has historically questioned the assumption that people should eat simply because the clock says it is breakfast, lunch or dinner time. Genuine hunger and the body’s ability to process food are part of the picture.
This becomes particularly obvious during illness, when appetite often decreases naturally. Rather than viewing every reduction in appetite as something that must immediately be overcome, Natural Hygiene asks why the body may temporarily be reducing its demand for food.
Orthotrophy and fasting
It may seem strange that a philosophy of correct feeding would also place importance on periods without food.
But the two ideas are closely related.
If eating should respond to the needs and capacities of the organism, then there may also be circumstances in which eating is temporarily inappropriate. Shelton’s extensive work on fasting grew from this same biological perspective.
Within Natural Hygiene, fasting is not regarded as nutrition. It is the temporary absence of nutrition, allowing the body’s resources to be directed differently while stored reserves sustain essential functions.
This connects orthotrophy with another unusual Shelton concept we have explored: Biogony, his term for the active physiological processes he believed were involved in the body’s struggle to restore normal conditions.
Why orthotrophy still matters
The word may be obscure, but the question behind it is increasingly relevant.
Modern food environments offer an enormous range of products engineered for convenience, shelf life, stimulation and taste. At the same time, nutritional discussion can become dominated by isolated nutrients, supplements and numerical targets.
Orthotrophy asks us to zoom out.
- Is this food biologically appropriate?
- Is it being eaten in its natural state?
- Are we genuinely hungry?
- Are we eating more than the body requires?
- Does the meal place unnecessary digestive demands on the body?
- Are the other requirements of health being met?
Those questions are very different from simply asking how many grams of protein or how many calories something contains.
From orthotrophy to Natural Body Intelligence
The terminology has largely disappeared, but the underlying idea remains central to Natural Hygiene.
The body is not a passive container into which health can be poured in the form of nutrients. It is a living organism constantly regulating, adapting, digesting, assimilating, eliminating and repairing.
Food supplies material. The body performs the work.
Understanding that distinction changes the way we think about nutrition.
It moves the focus away from chasing individual nutrients and towards creating the conditions in which the body’s own intelligence can function effectively.
The forgotten language of Natural Hygiene
Orthotrophy is part of a much larger vocabulary developed and used by early Natural Hygienists to describe life, health and disease more precisely.

The term orthotrophy appears throughout Herbert M. Shelton’s Natural Hygiene writings. Shelton explained the term in The Hygienic Care of Children, where he placed orthotrophy within his broader concept of Orthobionomics. His multi-volume Hygienic System also included a volume titled Orthotrophy devoted to food and feeding.
Understanding these older terms helps preserve an important part of Natural Hygiene history — and, more importantly, helps recover some of the questions about human biology that those terms were created to explore.
