Natural Hygiene is often presented as a collection of practices: eat naturally, sleep properly, exercise, rest and occasionally fast.
But the early Natural Hygienists were trying to describe something much bigger.
They believed health should be understood through the laws governing living organisms.
Herbert M. Shelton repeatedly referred to the Laws of Life, placing them within his wider discussion of Bionomy and Orthobionomics.
So what did he mean?
Life is not random
Every living organism operates within biological constraints.
A fish requires particular environmental conditions. A plant requires light, water, minerals and suitable temperatures. A human being also has biological requirements.
We cannot negotiate with these requirements simply because modern life makes ignoring them convenient.
We require sleep. We require water. We require appropriate nourishment. We require movement and periods of rest. We require tolerable temperatures, oxygen and suitable environmental conditions.
The early Hygienists regarded these requirements not as optional lifestyle accessories but as consequences of biological law.
Bionomy: the laws of living functions
One of the forgotten terms that helps explain this idea is Bionomy.
Shelton described bionomy as the science of the laws of living functions and as a branch of biology concerned with habits and adaptation.
That definition tells us something important about the Natural Hygiene project.
It was not intended merely as a list of foods to eat or things to avoid. It was an attempt to ask:
What conditions does a human organism require because of the kind of organism it is?
Law 1: biological needs cannot be permanently substituted
If the body needs sleep, stimulation cannot permanently substitute for sleep.
If it needs water, another substance cannot change the underlying requirement for water.
If it needs appropriate nourishment, no amount of stimulation can manufacture nutrients from nothing.
This principle sits behind much of Natural Hygiene.
A genuine biological requirement must ultimately be met by supplying that requirement or by creating the conditions in which the body can obtain and use it.
Law 2: the body performs the work
Food does not nourish the body by itself.
The body must digest it, absorb it, transport its components and incorporate or utilise them.
Sleep does not repair the body as though sleep were a medicine. Sleep provides a biological condition in which patterns of activity change and restorative processes can proceed.
Exercise does not simply “give” us fitness. The body responds to appropriate physical demand by adapting.
This is a foundational Natural Hygiene idea: the living organism is the active agent.
Law 3: every action has a physiological cost
Thinking requires activity. Digestion requires activity. Movement requires activity. Temperature regulation requires activity. Responding to stress requires activity.
The body does not possess infinite functional capacity at any one moment.
This is where the historical Natural Hygiene concept of Enervation becomes relevant.
Shelton and other Hygienists used the term for reduced functional capacity associated with excessive demands and insufficient recovery.
The practical principle is straightforward: expenditure and recovery must remain in relationship.
Law 4: stimulation is not the same as power
Something can increase activity without creating new biological capacity.
An exhausted person can temporarily become highly alert when frightened. Excitement can make tiredness disappear for a while. Caffeine can reduce the sensation of sleepiness.
None of those experiences means the need for recovery has ceased to exist.
Shelton called the confusion between stimulation and genuine power the stimulant delusion.
It is a remarkably relevant idea in a culture built around constant stimulation.
Law 5: organisms adapt to their environment
Adaptation is fundamental to life.
The body changes according to what is repeatedly demanded of it.
Train muscles and they adapt. Stop using them and they change again. Alter sleep patterns and physiology responds. Change food intake and digestive and metabolic conditions change.
This is central to Orthobionomics: rather than forcing the organism continually to adapt to unsuitable conditions, change the conditions so that they better match biological needs.
Law 6: compensation can hide the cost
The fact that we can tolerate a condition does not prove that the condition is ideal.
The body compensates.
It changes priorities, redirects resources and adjusts function according to circumstances.

This ability is one reason poor conditions can sometimes continue for years before their consequences become obvious.
Adaptability is evidence of biological resilience. It is not evidence of invincibility.
Law 7: the environment matters
No organism can be separated from its environment.
The air we breathe, food we eat, water we drink, light we receive, temperatures we experience and social and physical conditions around us all become part of our biological experience.
Natural Hygiene therefore extends beyond diet.
It asks whether the total conditions of life are compatible with human biology.
This also includes our relationships with other forms of life, explored in Normosymbiosis and Internal Symbiosis.
Law 8: the body responds as a whole
The digestive system does not live separately from the nervous system.
The endocrine system does not operate independently of sleep.
Muscles depend upon circulation, nerves, energy supply and respiration. Every tissue exists within a shared internal environment.
This is why Natural Hygiene has traditionally resisted treating the body as a collection of unrelated compartments.
Local symptoms occur within a whole organism.

Law 9: symptoms and damage are not automatically the same thing
This was one of Shelton’s most important distinctions.
The word disease can describe both active physiological responses and structural damage or degeneration.
Shelton argued that these should not automatically be treated as identical processes.
He used Biogony for active processes he interpreted as defensive or restorative, while distinguishing these from pathology.
This distinction became central to his framework of Orthopathy.
Law 10: remove causes as well as studying effects
If smoke fills a room, opening a window may reduce the smoke.
But if the source continues producing smoke, the underlying problem remains.
Natural Hygiene repeatedly applies this kind of causal reasoning to health.
Symptoms matter, but they can also lead us to ask what conditions preceded them.
Too little sleep? Chronic overwork? Unsuitable food? Repeated overstimulation? Lack of movement? Excessive exertion? Environmental exposure? Persistent emotional strain?
The question becomes not only what is happening? but why are the conditions for this happening present?
Law 11: the requirements of health remain relevant during recovery
Illness does not transform a human being into a different species with completely different biological requirements.
Sleep, rest, water, appropriate nourishment, fresh air and suitable environmental conditions remain relevant.
What changes is how those requirements are appropriately supplied according to circumstances.
This is the idea behind Remedial Hygiene.
The Natural Hygiene approach therefore asks what conditions support the body’s own physiological work during recovery rather than assuming that health must be externally manufactured.
Law 12: health is a relationship, not a product
Perhaps the biggest idea tying all of these principles together is that health cannot simply be purchased, swallowed or applied.
Health emerges from the relationship between a living organism and the conditions under which it lives.
This is why Shelton’s terminology repeatedly returned to life, environment, adaptation, function and biological needs.
The body is doing the living.
Our role is to understand the conditions in which that living can take place most effectively.
Were these really fixed scientific “laws”?
The phrase Laws of Life belongs to the historical language of Natural Hygiene.
It should not be confused with a formally agreed modern scientific list comparable to the laws of thermodynamics.
Different Hygienic writers formulated and described biological principles in different ways.
The lasting value of the phrase is the question it encourages us to ask: what principles follow from the fact that we are living organisms?

The body is not a passive machine waiting for somebody else to make it healthy.
It is alive, adaptive, coordinated and continually responding to its environment.
Once we understand that, health education changes.
Instead of endlessly searching for things to add, we can begin by asking whether the basic requirements of life are being met and whether unnecessary burdens can be removed.
That is the deeper meaning behind the forgotten Natural Hygiene idea of the Laws of Life.

Historical context
The “Laws of Life” appear throughout the historical Natural Hygiene tradition and in Shelton’s discussion of Orthobionomics. His first volume of The Hygienic System examined life, environment, biological needs, adaptation, symbiosis and physiological compensation as parts of a wider attempt to understand health through the principles governing living organisms.
The terminology is historical, but the central challenge remains: before trying to control the body, understand the conditions under which the body naturally functions.
