Why can two people be exposed to similar demands, eat similar foods or experience similar stresses, yet respond very differently?
Early Natural Hygienists believed part of the answer lay in a concept that has almost disappeared from modern health language: enervation.
Herbert M. Shelton used the term extensively. To understand his Natural Hygiene model of health, disease and recovery, it is one of the most important ideas to rediscover.
What is enervation?
In Shelton’s Natural Hygiene framework, enervation referred to a reduction in the body’s available functional power — a state in which normal physiological work could no longer be carried out as efficiently as before.
It was not simply another word for feeling tired.
A person could feel stimulated, busy and apparently energetic while, in the Hygienic interpretation, continually drawing upon their functional reserves.
The central idea was simple: the body has limits.
When the demands placed upon it repeatedly exceed opportunities for rest, restoration and normal function, something eventually has to give.
Enervation is about expenditure and recovery
Every living organism performs work.
We move, think, digest, regulate temperature, maintain circulation, repair tissues, respond to our surroundings and continually coordinate thousands of internal processes.
Natural Hygiene recognised that activity and recovery must exist in balance.
If demands continually rise while recovery continually falls, functional capacity can decline.
This is where enervation fits into the larger Natural Hygiene concept of Orthobionomics: health depends upon creating conditions compatible with the requirements of life.
What did Shelton believe caused enervation?
Shelton’s writings describe a remarkably broad range of influences capable of exhausting or disturbing normal function.
- insufficient sleep
- excessive physical exertion
- persistent emotional strain
- overwork
- continual stimulation
- overeating and digestive burden
- poor environmental conditions
- lack of appropriate rest
- repeated disruption of normal biological rhythms
The important point is that he did not reduce health to food alone.
Diet mattered, but so did sleep, rest, movement, emotional life, environment and the total demand being placed upon the organism.
The problem with stimulation
One of the most interesting parts of the old Natural Hygiene literature is its distinction between energy and stimulation.
Something that makes us feel more alert does not necessarily create new biological resources.
We can see the principle easily in everyday life. A person who is exhausted may temporarily push themselves through another few hours of activity because of excitement, stress, caffeine or an urgent deadline.
The temporary disappearance of tiredness does not mean the need for rest has disappeared.
Shelton explored this idea under what he called the stimulant delusion: mistaking increased activity for increased power.
Does stimulation create energy?
This gives us a useful question to ask whenever something makes us feel suddenly more energetic:
Has this created additional capacity, or has it simply caused the body to use what was already available?
The distinction matters because modern life offers almost continuous opportunities for stimulation.
Phones, notifications, entertainment, bright light at night, work demands, caffeine, constant conversation and continual mental input can make genuine periods of low stimulation surprisingly rare.
Natural Hygiene would ask whether an organism designed to alternate activity with genuine rest can function optimally when stimulation rarely stops.
Enervation and digestion
Eating is another form of physiological work.
Food must be processed, digested, absorbed, transported and assimilated. The body performs all of this work; food does not digest itself.
This is why Shelton’s concept of enervation also connects with Orthotrophy, his term for correct feeding.
From this perspective, repeatedly eating beyond genuine need or eating while the body is demanding rest may add work at precisely the time when reducing demands would be more appropriate.
Enervation, elimination and toxaemia
Enervation became particularly important in the Natural Hygiene theory associated with John H. Tilden and later discussed extensively by Shelton.
In that historical framework, reduced functional capacity was believed to interfere with normal elimination, allowing metabolic wastes to accumulate. Tilden called this state toxaemia.
The traditional sequence was therefore often described roughly as:
Excessive demands → enervation → impaired elimination → toxaemia → physiological response.
This was a historical Natural Hygiene model rather than the way modern medicine classifies disease, but understanding it is essential if we want to understand the writings of Shelton, Tilden and other Hygienists on their own terms.
What happens when the body has limited resources?
The broader principle behind enervation remains fascinating even without adopting every part of the historical theory.
The body cannot devote unlimited resources to every function simultaneously.
When demands increase, priorities change. Resources may be redirected towards the functions considered most immediately important.
This links directly with another idea in Shelton’s writings: physiological compensation — the adjustments the organism makes when ideal conditions are unavailable.
That concept deserves its own article because it helps explain why people can apparently “get away with” unhealthy conditions for years before obvious problems appear.
Rest is an active biological condition
One of the most useful implications of the enervation concept is that rest should not be confused with doing nothing.
During sleep and physical rest, the body continues an enormous amount of internal activity.
Rest reduces certain external demands and changes how resources can be allocated.
This is one reason Natural Hygiene places such importance on sleep and rest during periods of illness and recovery. Instead of continually asking, “What can I take?”, the Hygienic approach also asks, “What demands can I remove?”
Enervation and Biogony
Enervation also helps explain Shelton’s concept of Biogony.
Shelton used Biogony to distinguish active physiological responses from the damaged or degenerated condition he called pathology.
In his model, the body may respond to unfavourable conditions through altered activity — fever, inflammation, vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, increased secretions and other responses.
Enervation concerns the conditions that reduce normal functional capacity; Biogony concerns the organised physiological responses Shelton believed could follow disturbance.
Both concepts sit inside his broader framework of Orthopathy.
A very modern problem?
Shelton wrote long before smartphones, streaming television, social media, 24-hour news and the modern attention economy.
Yet the question behind enervation may be even more relevant now:
What happens when the human organism is almost constantly being asked to do, process, respond, digest, think, watch, listen or react?
Perhaps one of the forgotten health questions is not simply what we need to add to our lives, but what we need to stop demanding from the body.

Tilden made it central to his theory of toxaemia, while Shelton incorporated the concept into his wider Hygienic System and discussed the causes of enervation in his writings on Orthopathy.
Rediscovering the term helps make sense of an entire strand of Natural Hygiene thought: rather than continually trying to stimulate an exhausted organism, first consider why its normal functional capacity may have been reduced.
