The phrase vital force can sound mysterious today.
It can conjure images of invisible energies, spiritual forces or something outside biology.
But when Herbert M. Shelton and earlier Natural Hygienists wrote about vital power, they were trying to describe a very practical observation: a living organism possesses the capacity to act, adapt, regulate, repair and respond — and that capacity is not unlimited at every moment.
Understanding what they meant helps make sense of several other forgotten Natural Hygiene concepts, including Enervation, Physiological Compensation, Biogony and the Laws of Life.
What did “vital power” mean?
In historical Natural Hygiene writing, vital power referred broadly to the functional capacity of the living organism.
A living body can digest food, move, regulate temperature, respond to its environment, maintain circulation, repair tissue and coordinate countless processes simultaneously.
A dead body cannot.
The difference is not that a dead body lacks the chemical elements from which life is made. It lacks the organised activity of life itself.
The early Hygienists used terms such as vital power to talk about that capacity for organised living activity.
Vital power is not a mysterious substance
It is useful to separate the historical Natural Hygiene idea from modern claims about invisible healing energies.
There is no need to imagine a measurable substance called “vital force” flowing through the body.
Modern physiology describes biological capacity through many specific mechanisms: cellular energy metabolism, nervous-system activity, circulation, oxygen delivery, hormonal signalling, nutrient availability, tissue repair and countless regulatory processes.
The old phrase was broader and less precise.
Its value lies in the question it asks:
How much functional capacity does the organism have available, and where is that capacity being directed?
Living requires continual work
Being alive is active.
Even while lying completely still, the body is maintaining temperature, circulation, breathing, cellular gradients, neurological activity, tissue maintenance and thousands of chemical reactions.
Add walking, thinking, digesting, exercising, emotional stress or temperature extremes and demands change again.
The body continually allocates resources according to circumstances.
This is why the idea of vital power connects so closely with Physiological Compensation.
Why do we feel powerful one day and depleted another?
Our capacity is not constant.
Sleep, recent exertion, food intake, hydration, illness, temperature, emotional state, circadian rhythms and many other factors influence how capable we feel and how well we perform.
The early Hygienists interpreted this changing capacity through the language available to them.
When functional power was diminished, they often used the term Enervation.
In simple terms:
Vital power described capacity. Enervation described its depletion or reduction.
The body must allocate its resources
Imagine having a limited amount of money available each month.
If one expense suddenly rises, either more income must become available or something else receives less.
Biology is obviously far more complex than a household budget, but the analogy illustrates an important point.
The organism continually prioritises.
During intense exercise, resources are directed differently than during digestion or sleep. During exposure to cold, thermoregulation becomes a priority. During tissue injury, local repair processes increase.
What the Hygienists called vital power was therefore closely connected with the body’s ability to organise its available resources.
Does food give us vital power?
Food supplies raw materials and chemical energy.
But food does not perform digestion.
The body must do that.
This distinction mattered enormously to Shelton.
The organism receives material from food, but living tissues must digest, absorb, transport, transform, store and use that material.
This is one reason his concept of Orthotrophy went beyond simply counting nutrients.
Why rest mattered so much
If activity requires capacity, then rest becomes more than inactivity.
Rest reduces certain demands.
Sleep changes patterns of neurological, hormonal and metabolic activity. Physical rest reduces muscular work. Mental quiet reduces some forms of stimulation and demand.
This helps explain why rest occupied such an important place in Natural Hygiene.
The principle was not that rest itself magically heals.
It was that reducing unnecessary expenditure can change the conditions under which the living organism performs its own work.
The stimulant delusion
One of Shelton’s recurring criticisms concerned stimulation.
A stimulant can make a tired person feel temporarily more capable.
But increased activity is not necessarily increased capacity.
Fear can make an exhausted person suddenly run. Excitement can temporarily suppress tiredness. Caffeine can make someone feel more alert despite inadequate sleep.
The need for recovery has not necessarily disappeared.
This distinction between stimulation and genuine capacity was one of the practical meanings behind the old language of vital power.
Vital power and recovery
Recovery requires biological activity.
A cut does not close because a bandage performs tissue repair. The body coordinates clotting, inflammation, cell proliferation and tissue remodelling.
A broken bone is not knitted together by the plaster cast. The cast can protect and stabilise the area while living tissue performs the biological work of repair.
This distinction is central to Remedial Hygiene: create appropriate conditions for the organism rather than imagining that an external object performs the body’s physiological work.
Vital power and Biogony
Shelton’s forgotten term Biogony described active physiological responses that he interpreted as defensive or restorative.
Those responses require activity.
Fever involves coordinated changes in temperature regulation. Inflammation involves changes in blood flow, signalling and cellular activity. Vomiting involves powerful coordinated muscular and neurological actions.
Whatever interpretation is placed upon a particular symptom, the important point is that these are not passive events.
The living organism is doing something.
Why illness can make us profoundly tired
During illness, people often want to lie down, sleep more, eat less and withdraw from normal activity.
Modern physiology recognises coordinated sickness behaviours associated with changes in signalling, metabolism and brain function.
The Hygienists interpreted the same broad observation through their own framework: when the organism is dealing with unusual physiological demands, reducing unnecessary activity may conserve functional capacity.
This is one reason Natural Hygiene traditionally placed such emphasis on rest during acute illness.
Vital power and the Laws of Life
The concept fits directly into the wider Laws of Life.
A living organism requires certain conditions. It has finite resources. Activity creates demands. Recovery requires appropriate conditions. Adaptation allows it to cope with change.
Seen this way, vital power was an early attempt to talk about the organism’s overall capacity to carry out the work of living.
Can vital power be measured?
Not as a single substance or scientific quantity.
There is no standard medical test that produces a number called “vital power”.
Modern science instead measures specific aspects of physiological function: cardiac output, oxygen consumption, metabolic rate, muscle strength, hormone levels, neurological activity, sleep architecture and many others.
That does not make the historical idea meaningless.
It means it should be understood as a broad conceptual term rather than a measurable physical force.
A useful modern translation
If we wanted to translate the old phrase into modern everyday language, we might say:
Vital power is the living organism’s available capacity to function, adapt and carry out biological work.
That is not a perfect scientific definition, and Shelton’s own language varied across his writings.
But it captures the practical idea without turning it into mysticism.
The Natural Body Intelligence perspective
At Natural Body Intelligence, the most valuable part of this old concept is not the terminology.
It is the recognition that the body performs the work of living.
Food provides materials. Sleep provides a condition. Rest reduces demand. Movement provides a stimulus for adaptation. Water supplies an essential requirement.
But the organism itself must use those conditions and materials.
This changes the question from:
What can I take to make my body work?
to:
What conditions allow my body to use its own capacities most effectively?
That question lies at the heart of Natural Hygiene.

The terminology should therefore be read historically rather than treated as a modern scientific measurement. Its enduring value is the underlying observation that living organisms possess changing capacities, allocate resources and perform their own physiological work.
